I just wanted to write this post for those of you who are thinking of creating multiple blog or do have multiple blog.

I use MyBlogLog a lot and surprisingly - I see many people creating many blogs. Whenever I see this - I usually visit all their blogs and compare their ranking out of curiosity to see how well that person is managing all those blogs. I am not surprise to see that many of these blogs are either dead or doing very poorly and usually only one is doing really well.
3 reasons why you should only create and manage one blog and only expand as the years proceed:
1. You have less stress. Managing and growing a blog is not easy work if you ask me. If you cannot manage one blog - then why would you want to create another one? I say this because more and more blogs are being created each day and so does the amount of competition. You are mostly likely to feel very overwhelmed trying to manage many blogs and your efforts will be in vain.
2. You will be more popular. I have notice that people who host many blogs have only one blog that that really stand out. If you had only created one blog and put all your time into it - then you would have been much better off. You would distribute all of your efforts into only one blog and not many - that is why you would be more popular.
3. You will make more money. If you can get one of your blog to be really high ranked instead of distributing your ranking among 2-3 blogs then you will make more money. If you had promoted just one blog - it would have a higher PR by now and lots of traffic.
All this is my opinion and from what I am seeing so far from the majority of the bloggers I observed - so feel free to give me your opinion ![]()

Having only one blog is definitely less stressful. I’ve only got one right now and it takes up a lot of time, so even though I’ve got plans for more than one blog, I’m not sure if I’ll ever get them going.
I’m not sure about making more money though. Long term, I think one blog could make more, but short term, I think you could make more with multiple blogs. Should be easier to make a dollar a day from three different blogs than it would be to make three dollars a day from one blog? Maybe not?

I know from my won experience how hard it is to manage several blogs at once. Unless you have lots of free time and/or self-discipline, you’ll end up tired and dissatisfied. On the other hand, I’ve seen many respectable bloggers advocating a multiple-blog approach, especially if you want to make moeny.
What would you suggest to a blogger who has lots of ideas about different subjects? Trying to put them all in one same blog? Splitting them among different blogs? Picking only one subject for a blog and renouncing to all of her other ideas? Or what else?

Of course, if you want to “make moeny” you can try whatever you please. I actually was talking about making money.
(Hey, Sean, what about installing that Ajax plugin that lets your visitors edit their comments, huh?)

The real key is owning multiple blogs but finding others/partners to write for or manage most of those blogs!

I had, or tried to have, two blogs going at once and it was just too much work. Now I just have the one. Like you I see all these people on MBL with dozens (sometimes) of blogs and I wonder how on earth they manage to maintain them all!

Karen,
Thats very true. If you are determine and persistent, then its a good idea. However I think if someone is just starting out, then it is not a good idea to create 2-3 blogs instantly. Maybe they should create one first and experiment with it
I don’t like this comment system very much either, I will take your advice and change it when I have time
Knupnet, thats an excellent idea. You have to have to find someone you trust and know well though
I wonder the same thing John. I don’t know how some of them do it
Deron, I see what you’re saying I am thinking of just using one blog and getting high ranked like John, Darren, and Johncow though

Agree often people go for quantity instead of quality, which leads to more harm then good. I run about 3-4 blogs, but i’m a experienced and productive blogger, people should take it one step at a time.

I think it is still possible to have several blogs and still do well with the lot. But it takes a lot of proper management in many areas. I’d suggest getting used to the one blog first, and when you can actually manage it well, to slowly introduce the next and so on and so forth. I think the problem with most bloggers is that they jump into it (multiple blogs) too early.

I actually manage about ten blogs, but blogging is my full-time gig. I’ve been blogging for about three years now — and have made quite a bit of money going the multi-blog route.
Like the others said, I don’t recommend starting more than one blog if you’re a newbie and if you don’t have the time.
I have many interests and having more than one blog keeps things fun
Here’s a tip I’ll leave you with…
If you are a newbie, I do recommend getting your own domain name as early as possible. I just bought domains for many of my blogs and have had to start all over with PR ranking!!October 6th, 2007 at 6:46 pm -

I like my blog now and was thinking of starting a couple because my topics are all over the place. I just discovered adding pages and might figure out how to use that as a possible alternative. Cheers!

Sean - Good post once again. Managing more than one blog is a waste of time. If you seriously want to have more than one topic than just create a blog with many topics. Not only will the blog itself generate more traffic and money it’ll be easier. A good point about a multipe topic blog is if one of your subjects you don’t know what to write about, you have two other topics to choose from.

Concerning making money, I believe that there are more factors than just the number of blogs that you have. Obviously the focus of your blog is going to have a huge impact on your revenue potential - different topics have different chances of profit.
It is good to diversify your income, just in case something happens to one stream. What if you put all of your time and energy into one site and somehow it got blacklisted from google, kicked off of adsense, and acquired a bad name amongst affiliates? That could devastate your income.
However, I agree with the thought that you should not start with multiple blogs. Remember that success breeds upon success. Start one blog, put all of your effort into it, and when it comes to a good level of success use it to launch new sites to quick success.

I agree with Nick. Making money from blogging or any sort of online venture is similar to personal finance investing. You must diversify your investments. If you don’t your chance of profitting is like playing the lottery. Many large traffic sites use their own site to promote their potential projects. Once your in the game your set.

I’ll disagree slightly on this one.
It depends on the niche your working on and how tightly you are going to run it.
For example:
Your blog is about dog grooming. You post nearly all the time on dog grooming. It would probably not be a good blog to start posting about the technical aspects of amateur radio. They are not related subjects and would have different audiences. You would be better off with two blogs. There used to be some evidence that this would also work better for SE ratings. SE’s liked sites with an obvious theme. I’m not sure how much that is relevant today.
Unless you are talking about using amateur radio in dog grooming. Or, grooming amateur radio dogs, I guess.
Many of the extra “blogs” in MyBlogLog are really sites built around a niche or list of keywords and are not updated like a blog.
I do agree that it is difficult to work many sites at once. I have many sites, only one of which gets regular work and is my actually blog. Some of the others are built on WordPress because of the advantages a blog platform has.
I really enjoy this blog BTW. You have excellent posts!October 7th, 2007 at 2:46 am -

As always Sean, another quality post! I believe this to be true. People try to diversify too much when blogging. Rather than doing this , I think it to be highly more effective to stick all of your eggs in one basket(or in this case blog) and market it as much as possible. Great job again!

I agree that beginners should start out with one blog, but that’s not necessarily the best advice for everybody.
Time is a huge factor - if you post daily to each blog then obviously every blog you maintain adds to your daily workload.
Also, I am finding that getting the word out about a new blog is very time consuming and again, every blog that you run multiplies the time needed to maintain it.

i can understand and agree with your article, but i feel several blogs can work, some people do blog full time therefore times not the issue.
They may also use the secondary blogs for earning like adsense and not really focus to much on these, just updating weekly…

I disagree. If you enjoy writing about multiple topics I think they better be separate blogs. Topic focus is important for blogs.

I agree that there are merits to your opinion above but perhaps, you might want to qualify it to those who are just venturing into blogging. It is best for beginners to experiment with just one blog and learn the ups and downs before deciding whether to expand to multiple blogs.
I do know of a couple of bloggers with multiple blogs who are doing very well (no doubt motivated by their blogging income, one of which earns approximately USD5000 a month) eg. 5xmom.com and the other Sabahan.com.

I tend to disagree. Managing more than one blog might be considered as a waste of time, for some people. But for some other people who have high level of passion and high degree of authority about whatever it is they write, one blog would just not enough. The issue is not whether you are going to make money or whether you are a beginner or a pro, rather whether you can really enjoy doing it. Highly passionate people might not worrying too much about their post quality, since their blogs are intended to be more like a diary to begin with. They just want to share, and they would even feel stressfull if they dont.
So, are you passionate enough to share whatever it is you think valuable? Who (niche) do you want to touch?
How many blog to manage comes after answering those question.

Having 1 quality blog is much better compare with 10 blogs with no quality.. as simple as that!
Currently I have 2 blogs, I started one as my online portfolios of selected works, from there I gain few response and jobs proposals, it was fun and now I’m gettin serious about it.
Recently I made one more blog just for fun and aims mostly about my homeland, Sabah, Borneo malaysia. Now I’m having fun blogging while gaining some good money.
BTW.. really good post!

Well my stumbling across this post was very timely. I’ve been contemplating starting another blog. But it’s hard sometimes to keep up with the one I have. Would I be better concentrating all of my efforts on the one blog? I don’t know. I am a fan of spreading risk though.

My problem is, with my English blog I’d lose my non English speaking readers in my mother tongue. That’s why I just created an Indonesian language blog http://www.28oktober.net . Just few days ago, someone brought in the Bridging Blog topic. I thought, well, my blog is for educational purpose and I do it for fun. I just trying to test a method for making money online and if people ask for donation, I could tell them how to do it and if I have some income from the blog, I could use it to donate instead of setting up a new campaign every time someone asking me for help. But I’m not Santa, I have too many things to do daily. Blogging eat up my free time.
Let someone else thinks about Bridging Blog but thanks for thid pody. I may consider slow down after a while and decide which one should I keep.November 15th, 2007 at 3:25 pm -
