You will find alot of this in todays marketing world.  Whether you have to first get a million dollars, or find a topic you truly enjoy, or have unconditional love for all mankind, when we get to this point in the training we usually hit a big wall called “How Do I Do That?”

Well the truth is no one knows how to do that for you.  It does not mean that the training is no good, it just means that every one is different with different goals and different hangups.  But rest assured, the information is out there.  The only thing stopping you from being wealthy is you.

You see, people in general have a skewed vision about what being wealthy means.  They imagine that when they win the lotto it will be constant party on the beach and flying around in the G5 to see the president.  What they don’t realize is that wealthy people are busy.  They typically work harder and longer than average to manage and maintain their wealth.  In fact, some are focused on it so much that when it is taken away from them (as in a stock market crash) they feel they have no option but to commit suicide.

Most people will join a program only to learn that they have to work to earn money.  So they quit and find another program where the cycle repeats.  Unfortunately these people are the source of income for many internet gurus.

Here are two things to remember:

1. You receive money by providing value to others
2. The people who made the most money during the gold rush were the ones selling the shovels

If you want to be paid, provide something of value to others.  Whether that thing of value is your opinion, someone else’s product, or the latest iphone application (those tower defense games are like crack) you must give something to get anything in return.  Give people the tools they need to get ahead in the world and you will be a god among men (and women too of course)

Pay attention to the subtle teaching of the net.

There are lessons and then there are lessons.  When you join a mailing list pay attention to the mailings not for what they say but for what they are.  Think about why the list owner sent that mail out.  Do you see it as a blatant attempt to get affiliate earnings or does it truly provide the list members some value?

As a bonus to you, I am going to tell you the real secret to wealth:  Try everything.

Yup, that is it.  Try everything.  Join all the lists, spend as much money as you can learning as much as you can.  When you have filled your head with teachings from the net you will distil your true calling.  Try everything.  Many things you come across and spend good money on will be total crap.  That is ok, call it training.  It may be crap, but sometimes you have to step in alot of crap to recognize it for what it is. Try everything. 

When you get to the point that you are getting hundreds of emails a day and are completely overloaded a small light will begin to glow.  You will begin to realize the right and wrong way of doing things.  Alot of things you read will make more sense.  Now you can unsubscribe from the garbage lists and purge your world of the useless things.  You will start focusing on what you truly want to do, something you are passionate about. 

I’m sorry to say you can’t jump to the end of the journey.  Just as many lotto winners spend more than they win and are broke within a year, if you try to go too fast you will not be prepared and will most likely fail. 

Make some progress every day and you will achieve your goal, it is inevitable.

There are hundreds of people wanting to sell you information on how to make money online.  Some of it is fresh new methods, some of it is rehashed old methods, but either way none of it will work if you don’t try.

I read an interesting report the other day.  It reminded me that money is an invention, a tool.  The driving force behind that tool is trust.  So when you have a lack of consumer confidence as reported in the news, it really means a lack of trust.

This lack of trust is what drove people by the thousands to take their money out of Washington Mutual thus ensuring its collapse.  It is this lack of trust that causes people with money in the stock market to cash out, causing a downturn in the market.

All of this builds on top of each other until you have a recession.  But really we do it to ourselves.

I was surprised to hear about the troubles of Washington Mutual.  That is my bank actually, but I didn’t rush to pull my money out.  I knew it was ensured so what was there to worry about.  I was even more surprised to hear that many did get their money out of the bank.  I thought we as a people had moved past our 1920’s mentality.  I had visions of “It’s a Wonderful Life”

So what are you doing during these times? 

In case you didn’t know, turtling is when you pull everything in and hide in your shell.  You stop spending money on nonessentials like dessert and entertainment.  You convert all your savings into cash, or if you are really paranoid you buy gold.

This is the exact opposite of what the economy needs.  Millions of turtles creates waves in the economy that may take years to play out.  For the economy to survive, you need to spend money, plain and simple.

So my point here is don’t be a turtle.  Instead of focusing on what the news tells you, look around for opportunities to spend your money wisely.  Now is actually a great time to enter the markets.  A lot of great companies have lower stock prices and when the economy recovers they will increase in value.  It is actually a great time to buy property as well.

Now is not such a good time to start an ice-cream store, but there are many opportunities if you look for them.  Stay away from the doom and gloom of the television, that media is made for the masses and feeds their fears.  The people out there making millions today are not paying attention to the doomsayers.

So don’t be a turtle, while everyone else is hiding, you can be out there grabbing that milion dollar opportunity.

If you are active in the stock market you know what I am talking about.  In the last quarter of each year you go through your portfolio and sell of the underperformers.  You do this for two main reasons.  One is to free up some cash to invest elsewhere, the other is to take your losses for tax purposes.  It is a funny thing to have to lose some money to improve your tax position, but that is an entirely separate blog.

Internet marketing should be handled in a similar manner.  Once a year or so you should take stock at what you are doing and get rid of what no longer works.  Why just once a year?  Well it can be done a bit more frequently if you want, but you do need to give each endeavor a chance to grow.  Six months would be a minimum between purges.

It is not just the underperformers that need to be evaluated.  Maybe you have a website you are losing interest in or a program that no longer fits your lifestyle.  The worst possible thing you can do is belong to a program that is costing you money that you have forgotten about.

So it is during this time of year that you take a close look at your Visa bills and your PayPal subscriptions to make sure nothing is sneaking by. 

Keeping track of everything you are involved in and monitoring its progress should be part of your routine.  A simple spreadsheet would do the trick.  You can get one for free at OpenOffice.org as well as some training on how to use it.

The niche you choose should be a popular one, but not too popular.  It should be one that has just the right amount of interest and not too much competition.  Chances are that the common things, maybe even your favorite things, have too much competition.  So you want to choose something else.

There are alot of niches out there, what if you know nothing about your chosen niche?  You need to write articles and blog posts and you need to sound like an expert.

There is nothing wrong with being uninformed initially about your chosen niche.  But you do need to get your presence out there and it wouldn’t hurt if you at least sounded like you know what you are doing.

So what do you do?  Research.  You search your own top keywords and start reading.  Maybe you purchase the affiliate product you are promoting and market based on direct experience.  But even then it helps if you go beyond the product to demonstrate your experience to the public.

All this amounts to trading your time for knowledge.  How much is your time worth?
