Read on before you ask why Albert Einstein is sticking his tongue at you. Here is the story: I was surfing the Internet reading new blogs and came across a really cool one. This blog had a live widget that allow you to instant message other readers. So right when I was about to say “Hi guy, I am new here!“…I saw this frustrating formula that I had to solve in order to leave a comment in his cool live instant messaging widget.
Here is the formula:

I actually sat there staring at the formula trying to think back in Calculus which was 8 months ago in school. I sat there for a whole 10 minutes just thinking and laughing that he used this formula as a SPAM protection question. I actually loved it and it inspired me to go back to my Calculus book and start reading it again.

It’s been awhile.
2x^2+3x-9=0
(2x-3)(x+3)=0
2x=3
x=3/2x=-3
Answer: x=3/2 and x=-3

Damnit - Was that comment there 2 minutes ago?? xD
Ack well. Always fun to do a bit of maths any way…
Strange spam question though, because both answers are right. Which do you choose?

What?!?! Are you kidding me? I had to do math all my life and I don’t want to do it again just to post a comment.
I would understand if it was something like 4 + 3.

I have forgotten most of the math I have learned. I would probably forget commenting.

This is very nice - but it would deter genuine commentators as well, unless they like maths.

Normally, I get about 2-4 signups a day on my topsite (for blogs). I changed my question to “What is 5!? Ans: 120″
Well, I received no signups for almost two days. I changed it back last night and now it has returned to 2 to 4 signups per day. Of course, this could be coincidence.
Maybe potential signups thought the topsite operator was “on something.”

Aww that’s just mean! And probably not the best way to encourage comments on a blog lol!

Caroline,
I know.
It did have positive side effect though. I had this post posting his spam blog every (rambling about Russian aircraft–several versions of the Adsense loaded blog) darn day…luckily, he left after the test.

It’s not a formula. It’s an equation. I am floored by the fact that you think you need a calculus book to solve it. You don’t even need the quadratic formula to solve it! Most people wouldn’t even need paper.
I guess it would keep COMPLETE idiots (like the idiot who thinks he needs calculus to solve it) and grammar school children from posting, but it wouldn’t keep out very many others.

That was NOT the quadratic formula. He just factored it.
