There is one basic method to sell anything, whether online or off.  It is comprised of two steps:

Demonstrate how great your product is, then tell people they can’t have it.

Step 1:

Demonstrate the usefullness of your product.

As I said before, and keep saying, you can’t tell people anything.  They have to be able to make up their own mind.  So you have to show them that your product satisfies a need that they have.  It either solves a problem or informs them.  As you go about the web you can see this executed in many different ways.

Testimonials are a popular method of showing how useful your product is.  You see them everywhere, some seem valid, others may be questionable.  But they amount to an independant third party saying how they benefited from your product.  This carries much more weight than you tooting your own horn.

Showing proof of income is another popular method of validating a product.  Who can argue with those ClickBank bars staring you in the face.

Informing your customers of how many have purchased the product also carries some weight.  After all, if 10000 people bought your product, it just might be worth getting.

Whichever method you choose, remember it is your prospect who must make the decision.  Give them all the incentive that you can.

Step 2:

Tell your site visitors that they can’t have your product.

People are a little bit insane.  Once you tell them they can’t have it they want it even more.  Why?  Because they believe they deserve everything, who are you to tell them they can’t have a thing.

You can see this on nearly every website, a limited number of items being sold, for a limited time, offer ending soon, etc

Especially for people on the fence, once you tell them the door is closing they are compelled to act fast.

And that’s it.  Oh sure, there are a million variations.  But when you weed through the fluff, they almost all come down to these two steps.  The better you are at completing these steps, the more sales you will make.
